Hartford Correctional Center Overview

The Connecticut Department of Correction runs Hartford Correctional Center. It is a Level 4 high-security urban jail. The state opened it in 1977 and built it for adult men held before trial. Most people here are accused, not sentenced. Accused means a person is charged with a crime but has not been found guilty. Some sentenced men and some people held on federal status are also confined here. The jail sits on 10 acres in the city. This is not a county jail, because Connecticut unified its county jails and state prisons into one state department back in 1968.

The current warden is Devonia Long. Two deputy wardens, William Foote and Kimberly Such, help run the jail. Staffing stands at 337. The center also oversees a 12-bed Level 5 co-ed Medical-Surgical Ward at UConn Health in Farmington. That ward treats nearly 350 inpatients and more than 2,200 outpatients each year. Dormitories 1 and 2 opened in 1990, and Dormitories 3 and 4 opened in 1991.

Who Hartford Correctional Center Holds

Population figures come from the Connecticut DOC Monthly Statistics report dated June 1, 2026. The average confined population for May 2026 was 874. On June 1, 2026, the facility held 903 people. Of those, 219 were sentenced, 662 were accused, and 22 were held on federal status. All 903 were male. Women in Connecticut DOC custody go to York Correctional Institution instead, so a Bristol woman after arrest would not appear here.

The same June 1, 2026 report breaks down race and age for the jail. By race the count was 267 White (29.57%), 332 Black (36.77%), 296 Hispanic (32.78%), 5 American Indian, and 3 Asian. The largest age group was 36 to 45, with 283 people. The state does not publish a rated capacity for this jail, so no capacity figure is shown here. The two stats below are sourced counts only.

These numbers shift from day to day as people are booked, released, or moved. The accused share is high because the jail is built for people awaiting trial. The state warns that current incarceration does not necessarily mean conviction.

It does not include Youthful Offender records or people held for ICE. You can search by name, by inmate number, or by date of birth.

1. Open the CT DOC Inmate Information search at ctinmateinfo.state.ct.us.
2. Enter the person's last name and first name, or the CT DOC inmate number if you have it. A date of birth helps narrow common names.
3. Check that the result lists Hartford Correctional Center as the current location.
4. Open the profile to read status, the controlling offense, the admission date, and any detainer. A detainer is a hold placed by another agency.

Hartford Correctional Center Address and Contact

The jail sits at 177 Weston Street in Hartford. Use the main line for facility questions and the Public Information Office for record or custody help. Staff do not release report details casually, so have the inmate's full name and number ready before you call.

The Public Information Office is the right fallback when the locator fails or a family member cannot be found. It also handles formal record requests for Department of Correction files.

Visiting an Inmate at Hartford Correctional Center

Social visits are open here, both in person and by video. First, find the inmate on the locator to confirm the facility. Then make sure you are on the approved, active visiting list. You cannot visit until you are on that list. Bring a valid photo ID. No more than two visitors may come per visit, and that count includes children. Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Leave cell phones and other electronics out of the jail. State advisory rules set each visit at 30 minutes.

How a visit is set up depends on the inmate's group. Effective March 18, 2024, in-person visits for general-population inmates are first come, first served and are no longer prescheduled. SRG and PC in-person visits stay scheduled. SRG means Security Risk Group, a gang designation. PC means Protective Custody, used when a person must be kept apart for safety. Video visits run free through Microsoft Teams and are scheduled for every inmate. Each inmate is allowed two in-person visits per week. Visits are not held on the state holidays the Department of Correction lists.

Read the CT DOC general visiting page before you travel, since visits can be cut or canceled for safety reasons. A lockdown can suspend visits with little warning.

Note: Confirm the visit type and that you are on the active list before you drive to Hartford, because a late arrival or an inactive list status can cost the whole visit.

Mail, Phone, and Money at Hartford CC

Letters must carry the inmate's full name, the inmate number, and the facility address at 177 Weston Street. Skip padded envelopes, since the state discourages them for security. There are limits on who an inmate may write. Inmates cannot write to victims, to minors without a parent's consent, or to other restricted people the state names.

Money goes in through several channels. By U.S. Mail, send a money order or a certified or cashier's check made payable to the inmate. Mail it to the Inmate Trust Fund, P.O. Box 290800, Wethersfield, CT 06129-0800. Include the inmate's name, number, and date of birth, plus your name and address. Do not tuck cards, letters, or photos in with a money order. A mailed money order can take at least 10 working days to post.

Calls run on the Securus phone system, and all inmate calls are monitored and recorded. Families set up an AdvanceConnect, Traditional Collect, or Direct Bill account. Inmates also use JPay and Securus tablets. Since August 18, 2025, money can be deposited straight into a Tablet Media Account, though that balance cannot top $150.

Booking and Intake at Hartford Correctional Center

People are not booked here off the street. Bristol Police process the arrest at their headquarters, build the report, and set a court date. A person who can post bond or gets a promise to appear may never enter Department of Correction custody at all. A promise to appear is a written pledge to return to court with no money posted. Only a person who stays held moves into DOC custody and then shows on the state locator.

Once in custody, classification and movement run through the state, not the local jail. The Department of Correction's Offender Classification and Population Management unit handles assessment and transfers across the system. Classification is the process of scoring a person's risk and needs to set housing and security. A man who is later sentenced may transfer out of Hartford Correctional Center to a sentenced facility, which is why a name can drop off this facility's count yet stay in the statewide locator.

Lockdowns matter to families, since they suspend visits, programs, sick call, and law-library access. A sentenced man here can later move to a long-term prison, while a woman in DOC custody is held at York Correctional Institution rather than this jail.

The jail is on Weston Street, just off Interstate 91 on the north side of Hartford. From I-91 North or South, take Exit 33 for Jennings Road. Follow Jennings Road to Weston Street and turn right.
